This program pulls back the curtain on how we choose our work. In Depth started as a way to take the pulse on what kinds of cultural conversations the community wants to have. We open up the decision making process by engaging the audience in a post-reading discussion on interwoven social issues like community, family, and art to find out how to make theatre more accessible and relevant to the public. Through this intimate process, we create a bond with the audience that allows us to bring plays to Los Angeles that aren’t otherwise being produced.
In this 5- to 6-day immersion workshop we bring together actors, directors, playwright, and dramaturge to create the bones of new work, or to continue shaping a work in progress. A deep dive into the creative process, the workshop culminates in a free staged reading for the public, where we invite the community to participate in an honest conversation led by a skilled dramaturge about the work, its impact, and potential for new cultural understandings.
